Pick your base by what you want to wake up to. Highway 101 runs down the middle of the region and Highway 1 hugs the water, so the towns connect easily. From most of them you can walk the beach in the morning and be in a Paso Robles tasting room by afternoon.

Montaña de Oro State Park
Bluff trails above tide pools and sea caves, Spooner's Cove at the center, and peaks climbing into the hills behind. Wind comes off the water most afternoons, so bring a layer.
The Monarch Grove at Pismo State Beach
Monarchs overwinter in a eucalyptus grove at the edge of Pismo State Beach from late fall into winter. The grove is free to walk through and docents are usually on hand.
Paso Robles Wine Country
Rhone varietals, zinfandel and cabernet across rolling hills inland from the coast. Tasting rooms line Highway 46 east and west, and many now take reservations rather than walk-ins.
Mineral Hot Springs in the Avila Valley
The valley behind Avila Beach sits on natural mineral springs, with private hillside tubs fed from the source. Best in winter, and worth reserving ahead on weekends.
Downtown San Luis Obispo
Higuera Street is the walkable core: independent shops, coffee, the old mission and creek a block away. On Thursday evenings the street closes for a farmers market that fills several blocks.
Morro Rock and the Cayucos Pier
Morro Rock stands at the harbor mouth with an estuary of otters and shorebirds behind it. Cayucos, just north, keeps a wooden pier and a short main street barely built up around it.
Where to Eat
Higuera and Marsh, Downtown SLO
The densest concentration of restaurants in the region sits within a few blocks of Higuera and Marsh. Cal Poly prices next door to wine-country cooking, plus taquerias, brewpubs, and a strong coffee scene.
The Thursday Night Farmers Market
San Luis Obispo's Thursday evening market is as much dinner as shopping. Santa Maria style barbecue is the local specialty: tri-tip over red oak, sliced onto a roll, sold from grills set up in the street.
Pismo Beach and the Pier Blocks
Pismo built its name on clams, and chowder is still the thing to order along Pomeroy Street. Expect fish and chips, taco shops, and casual patios with an ocean view rather than anything formal.
Avila Beach and Port San Luis
Avila's promenade puts a handful of restaurants directly on the sand. Out at Port San Luis, the Harford Pier has fish markets and counters selling what came off the boats that morning.
Downtown Paso Robles
The blocks around Paso Robles City Park hold the region's most ambitious cooking, plus tasting rooms, olive oil shops, and a bakery culture that starts early. Reservations are worth making on weekends.
The Morro Bay Embarcadero
Morro Bay grows oysters in its estuary and sells them steps from the water along the Embarcadero, next to fish markets, chowder counters, and taffy shops under Morro Rock.
