Seven Destinations for a Southern California Weekend
Idyllwild
A pine town on the way to nowhere else. The center is small enough to walk end to end, trailheads start close, and evenings cool off enough for a fire even in summer.
Lake Arrowhead
The mountain weekend with something to do in the middle of it: a lake, a village with shops and restaurants, and homes built for groups to spread out.
Temecula
Tasting rooms along the valley roads and Old Town for a walkable dinner after. Arrange a driver, and reserve weekend tastings ahead since Saturdays fill early.
Joshua Tree and the High Desert
Go for the landscape and the night sky. The park anchors the weekend and the high desert does the rest, with open lots, long views, and very little light pollution.
Palm Springs
Pool in the afternoon, dinner downtown, mid-century architecture to look at in between, and canyon trails at the edge of the city. Peak season runs fall through spring.
Palm Desert, La Quinta and the Valley
Bigger houses and yards, golf in every direction, El Paseo for dinner and Old Town La Quinta for a walk after. Fall through spring is comfortable.
Santa Barbara, Ventura and Oxnard
A walkable downtown, beaches, and tasting rooms in a single weekend. Ventura and Oxnard are the lower-key end of the same stretch, at a lower price.
