Food & Drink
Know Before You Go
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Arrive
Fire & Road Closures
Wildfire has closed the highways and emptied the mountain more than once. Build flexibility into your dates and read cancellation terms before you book.
Permits Required
Wilderness day hikes need a free self-issue permit from the Forest Service station in town. State park trails use a separate permit with its own quotas. Sort this out the day before.
Pack Layers
Mountain nights run far colder than the desert below, and summer afternoons can turn to thunderstorms without much warning. Every season needs layers.
Cell Coverage Is Patchy
Coverage varies sharply by carrier and canyon. Download maps and directions before you leave the valley and don't count on data for navigation once you're on the mountain roads.
Winter Chains
Caltrans posts chain controls on Highways 243 and 74 after storms. Carry a set that fits your tires and check conditions the morning you travel.
Stock Up Before You Climb
Gas and groceries on the mountain are limited and priced accordingly. Fill up and shop in Banning, Hemet, or Palm Desert on the way in.
Kitchens Close Early
Many restaurants close Monday and Tuesday, and dinner service ends earlier than you'd expect. Call ahead and plan on cooking at least a couple of meals.
Bear Country
Black bears live here and are opportunistic about trash and coolers. Keep all food indoors and use bear-proof containers if storing anything outside.
