Indio Vacation Rentals

At the eastern end of the Coachella Valley, Indio is the desert's event capital — home to the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, year-round sunshine, and easy access to golf, date farms, and the Salton Sea.

Festival Season

Coachella and Stagecoach happen in April at the Empire Polo Club, three miles from central Indio. Those weekends are the busiest lodging weeks in the valley — homes book out months in advance. Book early and read the cancellation policy carefully. If you're not coming for a festival, avoid those three weekends: traffic on the 10 backs up badly and prices are high across the board. The rest of spring and all of fall are excellent times to be in Indio.

Golf & Outdoors

The Coachella Valley has more than 100 golf courses, and Indio sits in the middle of them. Mild winters keep the courses busy from October through April. The CV Link multi-use path runs through Indio and connects to neighboring cities. The Salton Sea is about 20 miles south: strange, vast, and worth a drive for the scale of it. Joshua Tree's Cottonwood Springs entrance is roughly 30 miles northeast, making Indio one of the closer valley towns to the park's southern trails.

Date Farms & Local Flavor

Indio has been growing dates since the early 1900s. Shields Date Garden on Highway 111 has been open since 1924, with a tasting room and a date shake that people drive across the valley for. The National Date Festival runs each February at the Riverside County Fairgrounds, with camel races and a date-judging competition. Old Town Indio has a farmers market and a handful of restaurants worth knowing. For a broader dining run, Palm Springs is 25 miles west.

Joshua Tree Day Trip

The Cottonwood Springs entrance to Joshua Tree is about 30 miles northeast of Indio, a 35-minute drive. This is the park's quieter southern side, with the Cottonwood Spring Oasis, the Mastodon Peak loop, and the Lost Palms Oasis trail, a 7-mile round trip to the largest fan palm oasis in the park. Fill up on gas and water before you go — there are no services inside the park. Arrive early on weekends; trailhead parking fills by mid-morning.
